Key Stage One comprises Year 1 and Year 2. Our teachers are Mrs Monk, Mrs Donaldson and Mrs Redfearn. We are supported by Mrs Johnson, Mrs Banning and Miss Smith.
We complete some work in mixed age classes, and also complete some learning in our year groups.
We like to learn in lots of different ways: individually, in teams, inside, outside, at our tables, on the floor, through play and through listening carefully to the adults in the classroom. We are kind and caring and respect one another, following our school mission statement.
Phonics and Reading
Phonics is taught throughout EYFS and KS1. We follow Little Wandle Letters and Sounds as our teaching scheme for Phonics. Phonics sessions are taught daily in groups. As part of our Phonics scheme, children read in small groups three times a week with a trained adult. Group reading focuses on a different goal each time: decoding the words first, reading with expression (prosody) second, and understanding the story (comprehension) third.
Year 2 reading focuses on boosting fluency, reading longer texts, and understanding comprehension.
You can help at home by spending 10-15 minutes a few times each week, listening to your child read their school book or discussing pictures and new vocabulary.

English
As part of their English lessons, children learn basic word class and punctuation, including nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, capital letters, full stops, question marks, and commas for lists. Children will work on their handwriting, forming lowercase and capital letters properly. They will also develop their writing composition, learning how to structure ideas into clear sentences, enabling them to write short stories, factual information and poems.
You can help at home by encouraging children to write things such as birthday cards, shopping lists and diary entries, practicing spelling simple words and remembering capital letters and full stops.
Maths
We follow White Rose Maths. Each topic is split into tiny bite-sized learning chunks to help children build confidence naturally. Lessons balance Fluency (quick recall of facts), Reasoning (explaining mathematical thinking) and Problem Solving (applying skills to new situations).
