Year 5 continues to both build on the work done in previous years and begin to prepare the children for Year 6 and their move to secondary school.
We continue to work hard on times tables knowledge as that is so important for almost all areas of the maths curriculum in addition to introducing more formal written methods for the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) We develop skills of problem solving and critical thinking.
We write for a variety of different purposes in and different styles in our English lessons using the Literacy Tree programme. This introduces the children to a variety of different texts and authors and grammar is taught throughout each lesson to ensure that the Year 5 grammar objectives are met. Reading for pleasure is a big focus and we enjoy ‘book group’ sessions to discuss our reading preferences.
In RE, we focus on Jesus and his family tree, on how different people helped to shape Jesus’ life. We explore church traditions throughout the year and we think about how our lives are affected by God and how we can live out our faith.
The clarinet is the instrument of choice for music lessons with Mrs Moore! Note reading, timings and working as a group all factor into each lesson.
We have a class reading book that the class teacher reads at the end of each day – this could be any text in any genre and aims to enable the children to engage with stories that might be a little more difficult than the books they are reading themselves.
We aim to provide a supportive and positive learning environment that encourages the children and enables them to develop academically, emotionally and physically.
