At St Winefride’s, we introduced Latin in 2020. The cultural literacy that studying Latin gives is important in our high aspirations for all our pupils and especially our disadvantaged pupils. It also helps them to understand the legacy of the Romans still present in the local area. Learning Latin also gives pupils opportunities to better understand the historical and cultural nature of the Catholic faith which is at the heart of the school. The pupils follow Minimus, a Latin course which is based on the lives of a real family at the Roman fort of Vindolanda.
An example of how this all comes together can be seen in the series of singing workshops led by the director of music at Nottingham RC Cathedral when all pupils in KS2 learned a song in Latin.
We have developed partnerships with Classics for All and in particular Leicester University, for example of Latin Day brought archaeology students, pupils and parents together to learn more about life in Roman Britain.
